About Patu Alpacas We chose our farm name "Patu Alpacas" because it combines two of our favorite things; gorgeous Cascade peaks and beautiful, graceful alpacas. The word Patu is taken from the Sahaptin language native to the Klickitat Indians who live in our area. It means "snow capped peak" and was used to describe Mt. Adams whose massive presence graces our farm and continually inspires us. Patu Alpacas is located on a ridge top just north of the Columbia River Gorge, about an hour and a half drive east of Portland, Oregon.Rich, dark colors including black, maroon and cinnamon are the focus of our breeding program although the farm has alpacas in a variety of colors. We strive to breed for quality confirmation and a vigorous constitution while improving fleece characteristics, especially fineness, uniformity and architecture. Our backgrounds stem from natural resources, having worked in both forestry and wildlife sciences. We have also owned and managed our own small specialty construction businesses for over 10 years. A desire to be a part of the land and to make our living here drew us to purchase this forested parcel and develop our alpaca farm. We plan to manage our forest and our alpacas with respect and sound scientific methods. Come wander among our majestic fir forest, check out our farm layout and let Patu and our alpacas inspire you to start or add to your own alpaca farm! Call or email us for directions, we would love to have you visit! |
